...'scan-it-yourself' device reduces time spent in checkout

Symbol Technologies International today announced that
Calgary Co-Op, a 15-store retailer based in Calgary, Canada,
is installing Symbol's Portable Shopping System, which lets
customers scan bar coded merchandise in the aisles as they
shop, greatly reducing time spent in the checkout queue.

"We believe that this technology will offer our customers a
fast, easy and convenient shopping option," said Ian
Routledge, Calgary Co-Op's Easy Shop project leader. "It
will reduce the time customers spend in the checkout queues
- and we know that's the least pleasant part of shopping.
The system also allows customers to keep track of exactly
how much they're spending."

"We're pleased that Calgary Co-Op is introducing
the Portable Shopping System to Canadian grocery shoppers,"
said Tomo Razmilovic, president and chief operating officer
of Symbol Technologies. "It's a technology that is
revolutionising the way people shop around the world, and is
a key strategic initiative for Symbol.

Calgary Co-Op is piloting the highly acclaimed system in the
Shawnessy store in Calgary - the first such installation in
Canada. Symbol's Portable Shopping System is in use in 10
countries and more than 200 stores worldwide.

How the system works Upon entering the store, a shopper
inserts an identification card to remove a bar code scanner
- about the size of a telephone handset - from an automatic
dispenser rack. The lightweight scanner is equipped with
three keys - ‘plus', ‘minus' and ‘equals' - as well as a
visual display.

As the shopper selects merchandise, he or she scans the bar
code of each item using the ‘plus' key and places the item
in a trolley. If he or she decides against buying an item,
it may be cancelled by scanning the bar code with the
‘minus' key. A sub total of purchases can be obtained at any
time by pressing the ‘equals' key. When shopping is
complete, the scanner is returned to the rack and the
shopper advances to an express checkout station.

Notes to Editors Symbol Technologies is the
world leader in bar code driven data transaction systems
with more than 5 million scanners and hand-held computers
installed. The company designs, manufactures and markets bar
code scanning equipment, application-specific hand-held
computers and radio frequency data communications products
that are used as strategic building blocks for solutions for
retail, warehousing and distribution logistics,
transportation, package and parcel delivery, manufacturing
and other industries.
