Cybercarte, the first pre-paid card to access the world of multi-media for no more than the cost of connection time, is now available from Gemplus, the world's leading producer of magnetic stripe cards and smart cards.

The Cyberis’ Cybercarte enables the user to access on-line with the Internet and off-line with cultural, educational or gaming software, from the nearest available Cyberstation. The only cost is the connection time.

According to Michel Roux, Head of Multi-media Business Division at Gemplus: "The Cybercarte is so user-friendly that any person attracted to the fascinating world of multi-media and the Internet may now enjoy access to it at the lowest cost. "

He adds: "We believe that this pre-paid card will act as a facilitator in that there will not be any need to invest in IT hardware. We strongly believe this will allow a greater number of people to discover multi-media."

Cyberis  is anticipating sales of over eight million Cybercartes by the end of 1999. In France recently, the company offered to equip all premises open to the public (including cafés, hotels, associations and educational institutions) with 8000 Cyberstation multi-media facilities free of charge. Cyberis will pay for the full cost of the station, its installation, maintenance, leasing of the ISDN lines and fees to Internet access providers, cost of communication time and software.

For their part, the hosting sites will arrange for the Cyberstation to be located in a protected and congenial area. They will buy Cybercartes from Cyberis which can in turn sell or otherwise make them available to the users.
