Mylex to Speed Data Access with Latest Industry Standards

Mylex, an IBM Company and leading supplier of RAID controllers has announced plans to support the new 2Gbit Fibre Channel, Ultra 320 SCSI, Itanium, PCI-X and InfiniBand technology standards.

2Gbit Fibre Channel Technology

The 2Gbit Fibre Channel drive interface standard is the latest open industry specification for the emerging standard. Mylex 2Gbit Fibre Channel RAID controllers will enable the creation of next generation storage area networks (SANs), providing data transfer rates of up to 200 megabytes per second (MBps) per channel, effectively doubling the bandwidth of current Fibre Channel products.



One of the key features of 2Gbit Fibre Channel will be its backward-compatibility with 1Gbit Fibre Channel. Thus, network managers who are now implementing Fibre Channel networks and SANs can plan to add next generation Fibre Channel devices as they become available.

Ultra 320 SCSI Technology

Ultra 320 SCSI is the latest iteration of the popular SCSI drive interface standard. Ultra 320 enables maximum data transfer rates of up to 320 MB/second per channel, twice as fast as the Ultra 160 standard. Mylex plans to offer Ultra 320 SCSI capability with capacity and scalability ranging in excess of four terabytes (TB) for high performance eXtremeRAID SCSI controllers.

Intel Itanium Technology

The Intel® Itanium architecture was designed to address the requirements of high-end servers and workstations for new levels of performance, scalability, availability and serviceability for high-end applications, such as e-commerce, online transaction processing and business intelligence. Mylex plans to offer support for Itanium processor-based platforms and 64-bit operating systems across its line of RAID controllers.

PCI-X Technology

The PCI-X bus specification addresses the need for increased bandwidth of PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) devices. PCI-X enables the design of systems and devices that can operate at speeds up to 1GBps, compared with 266MBps for PCI. It also provides backward-compatibility by allowing PCI-X devices to operate at conventional PCI speeds and modes when installed in conventional systems.

InfiniBand Technology

InfiniBand is a new bus standard designed to succeed PCI in the server market. InfiniBand transfer speeds can range from 500MBps to 6GBps depending on the width of the InfiniBand pathway. Unlike PCI-X, InfiniBand will support devices located both inside and outside the server or storage system. Its switched fabric architecture will provide a common foundation with flexibility, scalability, serviceability, reliability and performance for server cluster communication, networking and storage.

The affordable AcceleRAID line of PCI to SCSI RAID controllers targets high-density rackmount servers down to workstations and entry-level servers.

Availability

Mylex plans to provide products that support 2Gbit Fibre Channel, Ultra 320 SCSI, Itanium, PCI-X and InfiniBand starting in 2001. Mylex controllers are available through OEMs and Mylex’s worldwide sales and channel network, which includes distributors, resellers and system integrators.
