SYMBOL WIRELESS TERMINALS KEEP DELIVERIES ON TRACK FOR DUTCH DISTRIBUTORS Monday 27 November 2000 PDF Print "Leading Dutch distribution company chooses Symbol Technologies handheld terminals to provide real customer service" Symbol Technologies' market-leading wireless handheld terminals have been chosen to handle the data capture and management behind a Dutch distributor's leading-edge delivery process that could eventually be rolled out across Europe. The sale of over 2000 terminals to Van Gend & Loos EuroExpress, which has warehouses and automatic sorting installations throughout the Benelux countries and is part of the German postal network, Deutsche Post World Net, represents Symbol's largest single sale of handheld terminals to the transportation industry in the Netherlands. Van Gend & Loos EuroExpress chose Symbol products after extensive market research showed customer demand for more accurate and real-time information about the delivery path of their consignments. Top among customer needs was real-time tracking and proof of delivery. As a result, the company launched Project Quickstep in a bid to streamline and fully automate the distribution process. Quickstep replaced the old paper-based system with a bar code system which involves attaching a PDF417 (Portable Data File) bar code label to each consignment. The PDF417 barcode is a 2-dimentional code containing complete information regarding the parcel, including delivery address and tracking number etc., all of which can be accessed by a single 'scan'. This enables each parcel to be easily tracked via the Internet throughout its journey to the recipient, whose signature is also electronically captured on the hand held terminal at the point of delivery. From this month, the company's 2,000 delivery vehicles will be equipped with Symbol's SPT 1740 handheld Palm terminals with embedded scanners, ensuring easy tracking, correct identification and delivery of packages. Customer acceptance of deliveries is carried out by the customer signing directly onto the terminal screen. Casper Zweers, General Manager, Symbol Technologies Netherlands, says, "We have rolled out many successful distribution solutions globally and are pleased to be working with one of the largest parcel distributors in Europe. With our expertise in bar-code scanning and mobile computing and Van Gend & Loos' large distribution network we can help large numbers of corporate customers across the Netherlands save time and money in tracing crucial documents and goods." The new system has several other advantages: · It facilitates the move towards increased business over the Internet, gathering information for the Van Gend & Loos' web-site and WAP services · Customers can follow status reports and delivery directly via the Internet and are also able to access the information via their WAP phones · The bar code ensures accurate and secure data transfer for both the deliverer and the customer · The sender of the package can trace the package's path and see the receiver's signature and time of delivery on the Internet · Drivers are have more flexibility in planning pick-ups and deliveries · All packages delivered to one address now need only one signature - saving time and paperwork for the customer and the deliverer.
