Tamino Used As The Basis Of Switzerland’s Biggest Portal

the Swiss Post plans to become Switzerland’s biggest virtual shopping mall and expand its traditional business to embrace the New Economy. yellowworld will eventually feature a total of 300 different Web shops. Serving as the central information broker, Software AG’s Tamino XML Database enables comprehensive integration of existing Web shops and a high-performance search function for the entire offering.

Since January 1, 1998, all postal services except letters and packages weighing up to 20 kilograms have been offered by other providers in Switzerland. Soon though there will be no traces of a monopoly whatsoever. Under increasing competitive pressures, the Swiss Post’s management has joined the ranks of innovative electronic business strategists. "Our goal is to tap the e-business market with yellowworld and become market leader in Switzerland," explains Jean-Pierre Streich, CEO of yellowworld AG. "We want to become Switzerland’s biggest virtual shopping mall."

Yellowworld’s shopping area "yellowmall" features access to existing Web shops as well as a search function for all these shops. At the core of this solution is Tamino XML Database, Software AG’s XML information server.


The XML technology and Tamino XML Database allows yelloworld to bring together the offerings of existing Web shops and make them available to customers through a single point of service. Through integration of the different shops and an efficient search logic, yellowworld can offer customers the optimal shopping experience.

Thanks to XML, Tamino Database seamlessly integrates Web shops that can be based on various types of databases, for example relational or object-oriented databases. Furthermore, ad-hoc split-second queries to databases with large, heterogeneous data volumes are possible. "As a native XML server, Tamino XML Database can process the query without having to convert the format and can thus provide a response within seconds," explains Adrian Keller, Business Development Manager at Software AG. The response time to a query in Structured Query Language (SQL) that is sent to a traditional database containing complexly structured data can be extremely slow. "Software AG’s XML database is - thanks to its native XML processing - at least ten times faster," explains Streich.

Yellowworld eventually plans to integrate a total of 300 Web shops. XML and Tamino XML Database make the infrastructure flexible and open to all changes. When Christmas 2000 rolls around, the Swiss aim to show how electronic business can be professionally handled even during the busiest shopping season of the year.
