. . . New ICS appliances handle ten times more Web traffic than
traditional solutions . . .

IBM today announced new eServer* xSeries** appliances for Internet
caching. The xSeries models come embedded with Novell's industry leading
Caching System that gives web servers the ability to handle in excess of
ten times more web traffic than before.

The eServer xSeries Internet Caching Solution (ICS) appliance is a
purpose-built server that functions as a web browser or web server
accelerator. It provides an unparalleled combination of speed, fault
tolerance and manageability, improving user productivity and reducing time
spent waiting on the Internet while browsing external or internal

In a reverse proxy configuration, the xSeries ICS appliance is placed
between a Web server and the Internet. Inbound content requests are
intercepted by the appliance, which serves cached pages locally. In this
configuration, the appliance typically caches about 85 percent of a
server's content, significantly reducing the customer's wait time and
increasing satisfaction.

Having an xSeries ICS appliance installed in the network allows companies
to capitalize on throughput, saving this critical resource for other tasks
and transactions and enabling the business to become more profitable.

The xSeries ICS appliance is easy to install and manage and is performance
optimized with pre-configured memory, storage and LAN cards. No native
operating system is required, which means that an ICS appliance can be
plugged into a network infrastructure in as few as 10 minutes. The ICS
appliance boots automatically and configures through any of the popular
Internet interfaces.

The xSeries ICS appliance provides many customer benefits including:

· Reduces browser and web server response time

· Lower network telecommunications and bandwidth costs

· Faster e-commerce transactions

· Reduced customer wait time

· Controlled access to unsolicited web sites

· Best price/performance caching solution in the market today

· Increased employee productivity

· Return on investment achievable in less than 4 months

· Ability to scale e-business infrastructures to handle peak demand

· No need for native operating systems taking out inhibiting performance

· Low cost of ownership due to low system management requirements

· True plug & play internet appliance

The following IBM eServer xSeries models will be available as ICS

· x220, Pentium III, 866 MHz, 128 MB, 9,1 GB, tower (£ 3,129)
