Building on its successful strategic outsourcing partnership with IBM,
Cable & Wireless has today confirmed that it has awarded a new 18 million
US Dollar outsourcing agreement over eight years. Under the deal, IBM will
manage ASPIRE IT Support. This is a support organisation within C&W which
supports various business units totaling 690 end users and provides a
complete set of functions to C&W telecom lines and network services
customers. The contract involves the transfer of seventeen staff to IBM.
This environment will be combined with the several thousand desktops that
IBM is already responsible for under the original 3 billion UK Pounds
agreement with CWC, signed in September 1998.

Tom Christie, Senior Vice President of Global IT, Cable & Wireless said,
"We recognised that the non-standard environment of ASPIRE is much more
complex, but service levels were critical. We chose IBM because it is a
global services provider and, more importantly, understands the demands of
our business. We believe this outsourcing agreement will enhance existing
desktop support, and over time, will lead to significant service

Some of C&W’s business units operate 24 x 7 x 365 days a year. Each has
aggressive service level agreements (SLAs) with its customers. This means
that the IT equipment on the desktop is critical to achieving the SLA.

Bill Kleinhofer, Vice President and Managing Partner Cable & Wireless, IBM
Global Services, added, "This is an exciting extension to our original
contract. It is a challenging assignment with over 690 different seats,
across six main C&W locations and 19 customer locations where C&W ASPIRE
provide support. Each site is unique as there are no desktop standards
for either software or hardware. We are very confident that by combining
core IBM offerings with the unique features of ASPIRE we can deliver a
step change in services to their desktop environment."

The new contract is spread over eight years to bring it in line with the
existing CWC agreement, and will be run by the same management team headed
up by Bill Kleinhofer.
