Second generation 16Mbit High Density RAM, Based on Fujitsu’s FCRAM Architecture, Reduces Power Requirements and Enhances Refresh-Free Operation

December 6 2000 - Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe has introduced the industry’s newest Application Specific Memory (ASM), a second generation 16Mbit RAM with enhanced power requirements as low as 70 microamps.

Fujitsu’s new MB82D01171A is designed for next-generation mobile phone applications such as Internet access, music distribution, e-mail, video post cards, information and location-based services. The new ASMs meet the expanded memory requirements that support the advanced infrastructure and high-speed data rates required by new mobile cellular technology.

The MB82D01171A is based on Fujitsu’s Fast Cycle RAM (FCRAM) architecture. It follows the MB82D01160 and MB82D01161, which were introduced last June and are now in production. All three products are members of Fujitsu’s ASM series based on the FCRAM architecture, originally announced in June 1998 at the VLSI Symposium.

The new ASMs inherit an asynchronous SRAM-type interface and refresh-free operation with improved low power for long battery life. This makes it easy to upgrade memory without the need for significant changes in system architecture.

"The new ASMs complement our extensive range of Flash memory products for the mobile communications market, including the next generation and W-CDMA cellular phones and PDAs. They will be available both as discrete devices and as multi-chip packages integrated with Flash," said Manfred Mettendorff, marketing manager memory products, Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe.

In recent years, the number of end products that use DRAMs has increased rapidly in market sectors such as computer products (PCs, workstations and servers), consumer products (digital TVs, digital still cameras, video disks and set-top boxes) and telecommunications and networking-related products (switches, routers, mobile/cellular phones, PDAs and network servers). The different applications require higher performance and more diversified memory products, thus segmenting the DRAM market based on applications and performance. Since conventional commodity DRAMs cannot satisfy the different requirements of these various applications, ASM products are becoming essential, particularly for rapidly evolving multimedia, networking and graphics systems. The trend is similar to the market shift that impacted logic devices.

The variety of products in Fujitsu’s new series reflects the diversity of applications that can be served using the revolutionary FCRAM core technology. FCRAM includes memory-array segmentation and internal pipelining that speed random access and reduce power consumption.

Pricing and Availability

Samples of the MB82D01171A series will be available February 2001 with prices beginning at $30 each per unit.

Fujitsu continues to develop and supply high value-added Application Specific Memory products based on customer needs in different market segments. These products will incorporate Fujitsu’s high-speed, low-power FCRAM core technology, high-speed interface technology and industry-leading small packaging technologies. The company plans to continuously enhance the speed, low power and capacity of these initial FCRAM products, with additional versions expected to be introduced by the second half of CY2001.
