Fujitsu DAC is ideal for high performance applications Friday 8 December 2000 PDF Print Fujitsu DAC is ideal for high performance applications The MB86061 DAC, available from Fujitsu Microelectronics, is the ultimate high speed, high-resolution CMOS DAC solution. Application areas already identified include base-stations, advanced antenna systems, test equipment, satellite up-links and ultra-high resolution imaging systems. DACs at this level of performance, 12-bit 400MSa/s, typically determine overall system performance and represent a part of the market traditionally dominated by Bipolar/BiCMOS devices. Fujitsu's MB86061 CMOS DAC provides a number of benefits over existing devices while being easily integrated into existing designs with the DAC’s implementation of true-ECL (referenced to -2V) data inputs. Whilst the MB86061 is fabricated in a standard 0.35 micron CMOS process, it outperforms traditional bipolar/BiCMOS ‘ECL’ DACs. For instance, apart from its outstanding 400MSa/s speed, superior spectral performance is achieved via the device’s proprietary Segment Shuffling, which averages errors caused by manufacturing variations of the core quadrants. Segment Shuffling improves large-signal linearity of the converter’s transfer function, where spurious energy is redistributed as noise. The MB86061 also offers a significant saving in board area of up to 68% compared with alternative devices, and its CMOS based fabrication offers a saving in power consumption of up to 72% when measured against bipolar/BiCMOS solutions. This power reduction enables further system savings in support circuits, such as the power supply. Also, by operating within the power dissipation capability of the 64-pin QFP package, without resorting to external thermal management, more savings are achieved by avoiding costly heat-sinks and the even more costly process of fitting them. Add to this increased performance and cost saving, the possible improvement in system production yield and even the elimination of expensive select-on-test or calibration procedures, and it can be seen that the OEM or systems integrator can achieve significant savings and higher end product margin. Support for the MB86061 is provided by a customer development kit, which allows designers to evaluate the device and verify performance under specific conditions, prior to committing to prototype development. The MB86061PFQ is available now in production quantities.
