A residential care home service in North Yorkshire has revealed how mobile technology has transformed the way its staff cares for its residents. Clifton St Annes has implemented the mobile Caresys solution from software and services provider Advanced, and found its carers have gained nearly an extra hour per shift* to engage with residents, equating to 15% in time savings on admin work. This new way of working has also contributed to Clifton St Annes winning its Quality Care Commission’s ‘outstanding’ rating, held by only 1% of care homes in the UK, for both of its homes.

Since rolling out the one-stop care home management solution, Clifton St Annes has reduced the admin burden on its 100 employees working across its two homes – St John’s House and The Millings – housing 70 residents. Caresys Mobile has simplified the historically complex process of recording care information and writing handovers, allowing more time for carers to add a personal touch and a fun edge to the homes.

Lou Squires, Managing Director at Clifton St Annes, said: “This technology has made us all realise how dated and vulnerable our paper records were, and how time consuming and inefficient it was for our carers to go back and read through notes made by them and their colleagues, which were, at times, unreadable. Caresys Mobile now gives them the information they need live at their fingertips, and the quality and accuracy of that information has improved too.”

By saving time on admin, carers now have at least 45 minutes extra each to spend with the residents on every shift. This time saving of nearly 15% means better care. Embracing mobile technology has given them more time to interact with residents as well as encouraged kitchen and domestic staff to contribute more to record keeping. The residents have given the system the seal of approval** too, as they can see what staff have recorded in their care plans and notes. They are also reassured their information is safe, as only those given a unique password can use the tablets.

Just weeks after implementing Caresys Mobile, both residential homes faced inspections from the Care Quality Commission and the feedback has been positive. Lou added: “Our initial concerns about implementing the solution during such a crucial time were quickly squashed. There were no hiccups during the visits, and both commissioners were impressed. I believe the system contributed to us achieving our Outstanding rating***, which only around 1% of care homes in the country currently hold. The commissioners liked how innovative and forward-thinking we were, and loved the technology’s side effect of our staff having more time to spend with our residents.”

Nick Wilson, Managing Director – Public Sector, Health & Care – Advanced, comments: “As one of the very few care homes to hold the highest achievement in care provision, Clifton St Annes is a superb example of how to ensure that the happiness and wellbeing of its residents is at the centre of everything it provides. The team has boldly embraced mobile technology to improve its services, and it has paid off. Caresys Mobile has enabled the organisation to race ahead in the care industry and I have no doubt we’ll see more care homes follow suit as a result.”

• “The staff come in more now because they're not doing the paperwork like they did before.”
• “I'm not too sure what they are, but, after being shown, I never knew they had so much on them about me – I think it is good.”
