HJ’s 2014 British Hairdressing Business Awards

British hairdressing has long been recognised for its creative innovators and it is now widely regarded as a powerhouse in terms of business ingenuity and entrepreneurship. Employing almost a quarter of a million UK residents and with an annual turnover of approximately £6.2billion, hairdressing is vital to the British economy and the British Hairdressing Business Awards recognises and rewards the very best business brains in the industry.

From salon juniors and managers to front of house teams and business directors, these awards recognise the individuals and skills required to be successful; from retail sales, customer service, marketing and training, every aspect of the business of hairdressing is recognised within the British Hairdressing Business Awards. To enter the awards, individuals and teams must fulfill the criteria and demonstrate their passion, commitment and skill in the form of a dossier. A panel of judges, made up of a cross section of the hairdressing industry including representatives from the sponsoring companies spend several days marking the entries with interviews for the finalists in the Junior, Salon Stylist, Manager and Business Director categories.

Michael Van Clarke of the eponymous Mayfair salon has won a record 16 British Hairdressing Business Awards in the past five years and has been delighted with how this helped his profile not only in the UK, but internationally. “Winning a British Hairdressing Business Award has done an enormous amount to lift our profile both in the UK and around the world. We've always pushed to improve our standards in the 25 years since we opened but when we started winning at the awards, seasoned industry people sat up and took notice. On the back of that best-practice profile we have developed a global product company and a new salon business-training academy.”

Publishing Director of Hairdressers Journal International, Jayne Lewis-Orr concludes, “Hairdressing salons throughout the UK are doing fantastically well in this current economic climate and businesses are growing and developing by providing exceptional standards of training, customer service and technical skills. The British Hairdressing Business Awards recognises the fantastic business achievements of salons, hairdressers and trainees throughout the UK. “
