Job application rates down 30% as London 2012 Olympics impacts UK Economy

12th September 2012

The impact of the Olympics & Paralympics in London this summer on the jobs market is illustrated dramatically by CV Screen’s findings that there was a 30% decrease in the number of job applicants in August 2012 compared with August 2011.

The figures show that on average CV Screen received 138 applications per job vacancy this August compared to 198 twelve months earlier as Olympic fever gripped the UK.

Commenting on the figures, Matthew Iveson the Managing Director of IT Recruiter, CV Screen commented “Certainly no-one will be surprised that there has been a drop in applications during the Games, but certainly a 30% decrease is fairly dramatic.”

In terms of the number of jobs registered in August, Iveson was somewhat surprised by the findings “There was only a marginal decrease of 1% in the number of vacancies registered which shows that there is still confidence in the marketplace and employers still looking to expand.”

Iveson continued “It is fair to say that the productivity of many companies took a nose-dive in August as we all enjoyed the successes of our Olympians and Paralympians. It appears that August has certainly not been the recruitment industries busiest month in history, the success of Team GB including the likes of Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis, Chris Hoy, Bradley Wiggins, David Weir and Jonnie Peacock has certainly made us all proud to be British.”

When questioned about the outlook for the marketplace, Iveson continued “We have already seen a significant increase in applications in September as employees get back to work after the busy summer period and begin thinking about their careers.”

Iveson added “We’re hopeful that one of the legacies of London 2012 will be that the UK economy will be kick-started as the UK has certainly showcased it’s abilities to a Global audience.”
