New poll by CitySocialising reveals less people chose to head home for Christmas this year

More Britons chose to spend festive period away from home and amongst friends in 2010

It seems the adverse weather conditions, cancelled flights, slow running trains and ice cold temperatures weren’t the only thing keeping us away from our families this Christmas, a new survey by CitySocialising the socialising network and community for outgoing urbanites to meet new likeminded people, explore and enjoy their city’s social scene and expand their network of friends, has revealed that more Britons opted to spend Christmas with friends this year rather than heading home for the holidays.

Over half of those polled had spent a Christmas away from home in the past 3 years and of those that did head home a whopping 35% thought that catching up with friends would be the best part of it. Surprisingly only 27% of people polled said they’d never spend a Christmas away from their family.

It seems us Brits aren’t as sentimental as the seasonal advertising campaigns would have us believe. For a massive 47% of Brits the highlight of the entire festive season wasn’t spending time with loved ones or welcoming in the new year with their nearest and dearest in fact ‘Time off work’ came out as the highlight for the majority of respondents.

As well as wanting to spend Christmas with friends the other common reasons respondents chose to spend the holidays away from their families were due, unsurprisingly, to distance (33%) and work commitments (22%). Wanting to spend it somewhere warm (15%), the day being too stressful, (11%), and even because a day with the family was sure to revert a few respondents to acting like a stroppy teen (4%) also featured amongst the reasons.

Sanchita Saha CEO of CitySocialising commented:

“With more and more young professionals moving away from their hometowns due to work commitments and having to then build up new networks of friends, it’s quite unsurprising that more of these urbanites chose to spend their free time amongst friends rather than having to brave the weather and travel back home. Over the last couple of years CitySocialising has definitely seen a greater demand for the number of Socials we host through December and January is set to be one of our busiest months as resolutions kick in and Britons prioritise their Social lives and make more of a concerted effort to get out and meet new people and enjoy what their city has to offer.’’
