The Institute for the Management of Information Systems is today launching its internet based Policy Library for Corporate Members. The Library, to be known as the IMIS Policy Library (IPL), will include samples of policies that are required in organisations to meet regulatory and legislation requirements, plus others relating good governance and best practice. The initial library will have sample polices relating to Human Resources, IT Security (ISO17799), Sarbanes-Oxley, Data Protection, Health and Safety and many others.
The IPL uses Zequel Technologies DynamicPolicyâ policy management software (www.zequel.co.uk).
Access to the Library is controlled by a user key and password. When an organisation becomes an IMIS Corporate Member, it is given a corporate membership number and password. This is also the access key and password for the IPL. On logging in, a user first sees a Policy Panel. This contains a Pending Centre where critical issue policies are posted for members’ attention; a ‘My Policies’ repository where a user can add policies they may wish frequent access to; a key word search facility to find specific policies; a news facility for general information from IMIS; an alert button for general feedback, suggestions and comment to the IPL Administrator; and a Table of Contents.
The IPL Table of Contents is a multi-level directory divided into sections covering the main policy disciplines, such areas as Finance, Security, International Policies, Quality and Health and Safety. These sections are subdivided into policy categories containing the sample policies. There is also a directory of policy related services, suppliers and consultancies, many of whom have also provided sample policies.
The user simply clicks on a policy to display it and may cut and paste as required. A feedback ‘comment’ button on the policy page allows for user feedback. Users may contact the author of the policy, where contact information has been provided.
Ian Rickwood, Chief Executive of IMIS believes that the new IMIS Policy Library is not just the first of its kind, but will prove to be one of the most valuable services introduced by IMIS or equivalent industry bodies. He comments: “Whilst research shows that policies can improve performance and ensure that staff are well briefed on their part within an organisation, legislation and industry regulations are placing an ever-increasing administrative burden on management to put these policies and procedures in place. I believe that IPL will become a standard reference library across all sectors”.
“We decided to take this strategic step of helping organisations with their policy development, because every policy is management information, core to the running of any enterprise and fundamental to our mission of good governance in information systems. My ultimate vision is to have a Library where policies cover most eventualities and needs for every organisation across the board”.
There are over 14,000 members of IMIS with over 6000 overseas. For more information on Corporate membership oraganisations may contact the IMIS Secretariat at email@example.com or call 0700 00 23456. Alternatively an application form for membership may be downloaded from http://www.imis.org.uk.
