Some 20 million motorists will be hitting the roads this bank holiday weekend, making it one of the busiest for years. 1. Bring a map. A real, actual, paper map that doesn’t talk to you; even the best navigation system in the world makes mistakes. According to the UK’s leading road safety charity, 20% of women drivers and 30% of men have blindly followed their Satnav into the middle of a field.

2. It’s an era of pot holes. If you can’t avoid a pothole, slow down, but don’t break directly over a pothole, as this can actually cause more damage. And be careful driving over puddles of water – there might be a pothole hiding underneath.
