Telstra Europe Launches Cambridge's First Data Centre

New high-tech facility to provide hosting, business continuity and disaster recovery services to local businesses.

Telstra Europe, one of the UK’s largest alternative telephony and internet suppliers is today officially opening Cambridge’s first internet data centre at St John’s Innovation Park, Cambridge. To mark the occasion, an event is being held to welcome existing customers and local business representatives. They will be invited to tour the state-of-the-art facility and learn first hand about the site’s range of hosting and security services - from co-location to business continuity and disaster recovery solutions. The opening address will be delivered by the Australian High Commissioner, Richard Alston.

The high-tech centre is Telstra Europe’s fifth purpose built site in the UK and builds on the success of its existing facilities in London Docklands, Birmingham, Manchester and Sunderland. The facilities at Cambridge include a telecommunications room, a test lab and managed hosting and collocation facilities. Positioned away from mainline rail stations and airports, the site is ideally situated to provide fully managed services, as well as fail-safe disaster recovery solutions.

The new site will be connected to the Telstra Network with diversely routed fibre optic cable feeds, which will extend the reach of the current infrastructure for existing customers, who will be migrated to the site under a planned maintenance programme in January and February 2006. New customers are being connected directly to the network now.

Equipped with high-quality, resilient support systems, customers will enjoy uninterrupted voice and data services and experience no business interruption or downtime. The systems will include generator back up to an uninterrupted power supply ensuring a constant, clean supply of power, temperature control monitoring and fire detection and suppression facilities. The site underwent a 100% successful ‘black building’ test last week, which involved a live simulation of a total power failure event in a controlled environment to test the resiliency of the site’s business continuity capabilities. Such tests are carried out routinely at Telstra’s data centre sites as part of the company’s ongoing strategy of continuous improvement.

David Thorn, CEO of Telstra Europe commented, “Cambridge is a real hub of high tech industry and research and in need of a secure and managed data centre. With increased regulatory focus on data storage, including Sarbanes-Oxley, Basel II and the Data Protection Act, compliance and data security has been propelled to the top of the board room agenda. Having secure off-site data back up, at a safe geographical distance from the original site has become a priority for customers in the region and highly recommended by regulatory bodies.”

“We have a strong and loyal customer base in Cambridge and our new high-tech data centre will provide them and new customers with the most robust, and resilient data security protection and managed services available today. It will help ensure they continue to flourish, are in line with regulatory practice and retain their competitive edge,” he added.

The opening event has a number of high profile business sponsors including, Clydesdale Bank PLC, part of National Australia Group, which has recently opened a financial solutions centre in Cambridge; Network Appliance Inc, a manufacturer of unified enterprise storage solutions which is providing the storage infrastructure for Telstra’s managed storage, disaster recovery and business continuity services; APC which provides the cabinets for the servers and networking equipment, as well as managed power, cooling and other infrastructure services and Inspace Complete who designed and built the technical and office facilities including the provision of integrated Project Management on the Cambridge Hosting Centre.
