Crimestoppers UK Strengthens Business Continuity Strategy For ‘Most Wanted' Website Through Telstra Europe

Crimestoppers, an independent UK-wide charity working to stop crime, selected Telstra Europe to provide ‘Crimestoppers Most Wanted’ website www.mostwanted-uk.org with guaranteed 100% service availability for record numbers of visitors.

Launched in November 2005, ‘Crimestoppers Most Wanted’ is the only UK site used by the police to launch national public appeals for information about their ‘Most Wanted’ individuals.

‘Crimestoppers Most Wanted’ is designed to help the police capture its most sought after individuals, displaying photographs and CCTV footage to encourage the general public to help identify them through the use of its anonymous 0800 555 111 telephone number and secure online form.

The initial launch of the site attracted a record 33,000 visitors within 10 minutes. This prompted Crimestoppers and Reading Room, Crimestoppers’ website developers, to recommend that Telstra Europe should be called in to provide fail-safe business continuity, and ensure 100% availability of the site, whatever the number of visitors.

Reading Room’s Commercial Director Neal Davies commented, “Most Wanted is a unique service for the police in its fight against crime, but even we were surprised by the fact that on day one, it received nearly 3 million hits, putting a strain on our infrastructure.”

“In light of the overwhelming success of the site and a need to ensure Crimestoppers’ business continuity strategy was water tight Telstra Europe, which has a great reputation in the market to host and manage sites, was engaged to ensure this aim,” he added.

Telstra Europe now houses Crimestoppers’ mission critical servers in a dedicated facility at Telstra’s state of the art data centre in Docklands. The benefits include 100% service availability and a fail over internet link; “Tier 1” carrier grade connectivity; highly secure state-of-the-art facilities with 24/7 remote access all backed up with experienced account management and technical support.

Stephen Belgrave, New Media and Technology Manager, Crimestoppers UK commented, “On average since launch, the website has attracted close to half a million visitors per month; it is a hugely valuable tool for the police with ever more increasing potential being realised and it has become exceptionally popular with the UK public.”

“We now want to build on our visitor numbers and the website success to date and launch more interactive services for the public to help assist the police tackle crime. We are confident we have the right technology and strategy in place to expand and meet our objectives.”

David Thorn, CEO of Telstra Europe stated, “Crimestoppers is one of our most important charities and an integral part of the police force’s fight against crime. The overwhelming public response to the website demonstrates the importance of its work. We are delighted to host the website and ensure that this critical service will always be available to the public and the police.”
