Local Government Today Launches on The Community Channel
A new weekly half hour programme Local Government Today, which explores the issues that have a vital impact on local people is launching on Community Channel on 30th April 2007 and will be shown daily at 6.30am on Sky 539, Virgin 233 and Freeview 87.
The programmes, produced by The Local Government Channel, will find out what the public thinks of the services they receive from their local council and about the ways in which they are delivered.
News, views and reports from towns and cities across the UK will be covered in every programme with studio interviews and panel discussions focussing on the hot topics of the week.
Stephen Horn, Executive Producer of Local Government Today, says: “People really want to find out more about the services their councils offer. With the local elections next week, the spotlight will be firmly fixed on the quality of local services. People will also be looking for answers to their worries about recycling, refuse collection, local transport issues and the state of their local hospitals, amongst other issues. Local Government Today will examine and uncover the issues that concern people most and try and find some genuine solutions.”
Nick Ware, Channel Controller of Community Channel, says: “Community Channel is pleased to be broadcasting this programme, which gives communities the chance to comment on services and gain a better understanding of them.”
The first programme kicks off looking at whether or not we can create climate friendly housing and asks if the government’s new code of sustainable home can really deliver zero carbon buildings across the UK in the next 10 years. There is also a report on the challenges of recycling glass - a industry which has grown hugely since it started 30 years ago. The panel discussion will focus on the pros and cons of local government’s plans to restructure so that everyone has just one council.
The programme will also visit Newcastle to see how its regenerations plans are progressing in its regular ‘City In a Minute’ feature. Local Government Today will be up and down the country for this feature, so expect a visit in your home town soon. It's not always issues on our doorstep, which is important. In the second episode the programme looks at local democracy further afield.
This year’s Local Council Worker of the Year award is also being featured. In the first programme, the 24 finalists who have been short-listed for six major awards will be announced. Films depicting them in action will be shown on Local Government Today from now until 5th July 2007, when the winners will be presented with their prizes by Journalist and Broadcaster, Jon Snow at this year’s LGA Annual Conference in Birmingham.
