LONDON SKILLS SHORTAGE: HIGHER POTENTIAL FOR GRADUATES

The current skills shortage in London is creating many opportunities for UK graduates who just need to be educated on how to make themselves more marketable to potential employers in order to gain the leading edge.

The media industry is one of the most popular with graduates, and hence highly competitive. Pathfinders Recruitment, the media arm of the Angela Mortimer Group, receives more than 3000 applications a year from graduates hoping to work in this sector.

The latest Blue Book Salary Survey launched by the Angela Mortimer Group also shows that there is high demand for support staff and PR and communications professionals, particularly in healthcare, technology and digital media, as well as an increased demand for international requirements. However, despite this demand, employers are struggling to fill vacancies and currently London has the highest unemployment rate of any region in the UK.

Sue McLelland, Managing Director of Pathfinders comments: “Media employers want candidates who can demonstrate commitment to the industry and it is important for graduates to increase their marketability to keep up with the changes in employer demands and stay ahead of the pack. Pathfinders’ consultants are committed to helping graduates succeed in the media and delivering their clients the best quality candidates. That’s why they continue to encourage graduates to grow their knowledge of, and exposure to, the media industry. For example, what better way to do this than to show that you have survived, and even enjoyed, a few weeks in a high profile media agency during your holidays.”

Today, in conjunction with the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, Pathfinders is holding a ‘Joint Industry Marcoms Seminar’ aimed at undergraduates and recent graduates about to step into the world of advertising, marketing, media, PR and digital communications. Those attending will receive invaluable CV advice and have the opportunity to meet key figures from these industries.

Sue continues: “From our experience there are ten things every graduate should be doing to increase their potential, with the most important being relevant work experience.”

Other helpful hints to media success from Pathfinders Media Recruitment are:

• Proving your enthusiasm by reading relevant trade publications and media books to provide you with a good foundation of industry background knowledge;

• Match your skills and interest to specific roles, from public relations to event management and target specific positions;

• Sign up for trade associations such as Chartered Institute of Marketing and Chartered Institute of Public Relations, which are a great way to meet people in the industry and develop an understanding of career paths available;

• Brush up on your admin skills which invariably will be key to first media jobs;

• Attend careers fairs and industry seminars;

• Develop your university CV by joining relevant societies, getting involved in various organisations, activities and student publications or radio;

• Network, as sometimes who you know counts as much as what you know;

• Register with an industry-specific recruitment consultancy and make sure they understand your unique skills and are clear on what you are looking for; and

• Prepare for every interview by reading about the company and matching your skills with the role’s requirements.
