Emerging nations send their best to Britain

Three students from China, Romania and Iran will this week fulfill their dreams of commencing courses at the University of Cambridge, having secured top results at A-levels – and all in their second language.

The students are: Eva Niculiu, 18, from Romania, studying law, Bo Wen Wang, 19, from China, studying engineering, and Iranian Saman Alavifard, who will continue his quest to become an aerospace engineer, also undertaking a degree in engineering at Cambridge.

The students all completed their A-levels at Brighton and Cambridge-based Bellerbys Colleges, which offer foreign students the opportunity to take foundation courses, A-levels, or GCSEs in Britain to help them secure a place in their chosen UK university - getting to know the country, its culture and language before applying.

The students have found the Bellerbys experience highly valuable. Eva comments:

“Other than the obvious advantage of gaining internationally recognised A-level qualifications, the opportunity to acclimatise myself to the British culture has been an excellent experience. I’m sure this broader cultural knowledge will only benefit my future career.”

James Pitman, Managing Director of Study Group UK, which owns the Bellerbys brand, says: “Acceptance into Cambridge is an outstanding achievement and impressive by anyone’s standards, but to do this in your second language demonstrates these students’ exceptional ability.

“Foreigners who choose to study in Britain do so because of the academic reputation of our universities – they value the opportunity to enrich their studies by meeting and learning from people of other cultures. In turn they make a valued contribution, to the universities’ academic, social and cultural environments.”

Study Group is a global leader in international education, providing international students with specifically designed courses, including GCSEs and A-levels, aimed at helping the student gain entry into universities, degree courses and pre-masters qualifications.
