Michael Phillips, product director for, commented:

"This is great news for consumers who have been ripped off for far too long when making calls to mobile phones from land lines. By ordering Mobile Termination Rates (MTRs) to be reduced, Ofcom is effectively pushing for cuts that could see the cost of making mobile calls fall by as much as 25% or more over the next few years.

"It is encouraging to see that both BT and TalkTalk are already looking at ways to pass these savings onto customers but we would urge all phone providers to immediately pass on these savings.

"It will be interesting to see if the mobile networks introduce other 'stealth' costs in an attempt to recover the loss of this income.

"It is however disappointing that the reduction in cost hasn’t been greater and more rapid - initially in 2009 there were hints that MTRs could be reduced to just 0.5p – the plans announced yesterday will only go as far as reducing to 0.69p by 2015.

"This could revolutionise the landline/home phone market with the launch of inclusive anytime deals that include minutes to mobile phones – BT and TalkTalk have already made positive announcements in this direction. Consumers may start to once again favour landlines over mobiles as, generally, landlines are cheaper across the board.

"We recommend customers who haven’t switched in a while to take this as an opportunity to review their landline and mobile services and compare the latest deals on an Ofcom-accredited price comparison site."
