• More than 30% of Brits say their mum is the most inspirational person in their life
• Think outside the box for Mother’s Day and help transform her home
• Top tips to really impress your inspiration, from interior design expert Georgina Burnett
Mother’s Day as we know it is a time to celebrate the amazing Mums, Grandmothers and Stepmothers who have impacted our lives. Traditionally, we shower them with gifts, cards and flowers but this year, why not add more of an everlasting impression by truly giving back to Mums.
With National Home Improvement Month approaching, interior design expert and mother, Georgina Burnett shares her top tips on how to make Mother’s Day extra special.
Get in the Garden
Spring will be the busiest time of the year for gardening activity and if your mum loves her garden then a great Mother’s Day option is to make a start repairing any winter damage and battling some of the less enjoyable tasks.
Be creative – Georgina says, “Rather than giving your mum a bunch of flowers, how about helping her to enjoy her own? The garden can look a bit of a mess at this time of year so giving the patio a clean, clearing away some leaves (including the gutters) and doing a bit of weeding would be a lovely surprise. You could go one step further and put a bit of colour in the flowerbeds too."
As beautiful as picked flowers are, you can easily grow your own seasonal blooms opening up a world of opportunity for a lush assortment of spring favourites ranging from daffodils, daisies, lilac or freesia. Georgina adds “If the garden has become your mum’s baby since you left home, she would love PlantSnap. It’s an app that enables her to take a picture of any plant or flower to identify it so she knows what to add to her own pride and joy.”
Georgina’s top tip: Go seed hunting while looking out for an assortment of spring and summery blooms.
Kit out the Kitchen
The kitchen is one of the most central rooms in the house, no longer just used for cooking, it is often the centre of the family home. Meaning the way your kitchen looks and the way you interact with it can reflect moods more than you think. If your mum enjoys creating a Sunday spectacular or she has a signature cake recipe then a kitchen clear out could really brighten her day.
In Georgina’s words, “The kitchen has become the heart of the home. Even for those with dining rooms, the kitchen is often the main area for eating. This means it can be the most important room for many.
“Even if your mum has a fairly classic, neutral kitchen you can still dress it to impress with a careful selection of accessories to suit her colour scheme, just be mindful of not creating clutter or dust and grease magnets!”
Keep it classic when you are looking for kitchen homeware gifts by starting with accessories containing warm classic colours such as beige, cream, baby blue or mint.
Georgina’s top tip: Classic coloured items will completely transform a kitchens interior.
Spring Living
Spring is here and you can usher in a new season by creating a fresh and clean atmosphere in any room with just a few small changes. Decorating rooms by making one change can be as simple as adding colour - you can change the whole ambiance of a room on a budget.
Georgina notes, “This isn’t necessarily something you will be able to do as a surprise but painting a room can be done easily in a day. It’s amazing the difference a lick of paint can do to a room so your mum will be thrilled. If you don’t want to go that far, then just doing some touch ups could have an impact.
“As the spring sunshine starts to pour in through the windows it highlights how grubby they are! Having sparkling clean windows makes a big difference to how a room appears and feels so why not give your mum’s a wipe for the ultimate quick win present?”
Georgina’s top tip: Use light colours for the ceiling and work your way down to the floor by using bright wallpaper.
Smart Technology, Smart Choices
Smart technology products have gained significant traction over the last few years and what appeared to be futuristic fiction has become a reality. Keeping up with smart home offerings is no easy task so why not spend time discussing what would really assist mum – smart heating, a digital assistant or smart security.
With National Home Improvement Month dedicating its last week of the month (22-28 April) to smart technology, Georgina’s advice would be: “No matter the age of your mum I bet her doorbell never stops ringing, so why not get her a Yale Smart Doorbell? This way she can keep track of the comings and goings of her home wherever she is.
“I’m also sure your mum would love to know that her security is at the front of your mind, so how about treating her to a smart home security camera. They are super easy to set up and manage and don’t require any wiring. She can also have peace of mind by watching it in real time through her phone when she's out and about.”
Georgina’s top tips: Install smart security, smart thermostats and get voice-activated tech.
