The Average Toddler Will Say Goodbye to a Cot at Two Years One Month Old

Research into bed transitions of children has found the average toddler will outgrow their cot and move on to a toddler bed at 25 months old.

A survey of parents and grandparents, conducted by UK-based furniture manufacturer and online retailer Happy Beds, has revealed the average age a child transitions from cot to toddler bed, and then upgrades to bigger or more mature styles as they grow.

Surveying more than one hundred adults as part of its ‘From Baby Bed to Big Bed’ survey, the bed retailer found that:

• The average age for transition from cot to a toddler bed is 2 years 1 month.

• The average age for transition from toddler bed to a big kid bed is 4 years 3 months.

• The average age for transition from big kid bed to a pre-teen bed is 8 years 10 months.

• The average age for transition from pre-teen to a teen bed is 12.

When it comes to choosing which children’s bed to buy, the colour and the child’s opinion were found to be the most important factors for purchasing, with price a close third.

The survey also asked participants to provide their top tips for making the change of beds as easy as possible and some clear themes were found: Keeping a consistent routine, finding the perfect bed, involving the child in the process, and timing the switch so it doesn’t align with other milestone changes.

One anonymised participant said:

‘Make sure the timings do not clash with other big events like potty training or a new sibling’ whereas another advised:

‘Get them involved, make sure you keep some elements from previous bed i.e. teddies, comforter blanket, etc.’

Joy Richards, Sleep Specialist at Happy Beds, said:
“At Happy Beds, we believe such a milestone of changing bed should be celebrated and not feared, and we try and make this as exciting as possible for children with our range of bright themed beds. So, the fact colour and the child’s opinion were found to be so important when making a purchase of a new bed was pleasantly reaffirming.

“We have loved reading through all of the top tips given by all in our ‘From Baby Bed to Big Bed’ survey too, and we couldn’t wait to share them. After all, who better to learn from than those who have been through the process before?”
