Blackpool Council's 'quick win' approach to improving housing sector efficiency has been showcased by The Audit Commission. The council worked with Manchester-based Mobysoft to become the first local authority to set up an 'integrated SMS text reminder service'.

The Commission praised the 3% increase in the 'routine repairs completed on target KPI', as well as a 40% fall in 'no access' visits and the overwhelming tenant approval of text message communication.

Derek Steele, Mobysoft's managing director, comments, "The council's system sends automated text messages prior to the repair appointments. If tenants are no longer available for the visit, they simply text back informing the council. This may sound amazingly simple, but it has improved the service as well as providing an efficiency boost."
