MARTIAL ARTS CHAIR CONCERNED ABOUT UNSCRUPULOUS INSURANCE PROVISION

The National Association of Karate and Martial Art Schools (NAKMAS) voice concerns over potentially unscrupulous insurance provision for clubs and organisations. ‘Customers who move across from one governing body or insurer to another, worry that existing insurances will become void, but this is not always the case’ says Joe Ellis, Chair of NAKMAS.

Ellis explains ‘NAKMAS has experienced more and more clubs and associations wanting to change governing bodies and insurers as they are disillusioned with the services they are currently being offered. What prevents them is the threat from their insurers that their existing public and products liability insurance will become null and void and that they will be left at risk’.

The ideal insurance arrangement is offered on a ‘claims occurring’ basis which allows the claim to be made outside the insurance period within which the claim occurred. A customer can then freely leave the insurer if they so wish and join another who offers cover on the same basis.

Insurance offered on a ‘claims made’ basis by some companies seemingly locks the customer into that particular company and subsequently membership of a governing body. The claims are only honoured if they are made during the actual insurance period. This is not a problem if the customer remains with that insurer. However, if they choose to leave and the new insurer offers ‘claims occurring’ which most do, they could find that there will be a gap which is filled by neither insurer should a claim be necessary.

NAKMAS has remedied this dilemma by seeking out a comprehensive quality insurance package with Hiscox Insurance who is happy to offer retrospective cover for new members who find themselves in this situation, which also enhances their insurance cover and removes the risks.

Ellis said ‘NAKMAS regularly review its working partners and their services, to ensure we get the best deals for our members, allowing them flexibility according to their needs. If something is missing, we spend a considerable amount of time tracking down a solution. Clubs and organisations can be confident that the insurance package we offer is second to none; and the best professional insurance package available within the United Kingdom’.
