For the forth year in a row, the British Legal Technology Forum (BLTF) has now sold out, four weeks before the event is due to take place. An estimated 1,300 visitors from the world of law, legal technology and IT security are expected to attend this year’s BLTF, which takes place at the Old Billingsgate in central London on 13 March 2018.

The full line-up of expert speakers for this year’s sell-out event is stronger than ever. The 50-strong roster includes legal practice IT Directors, Managing Partners, General Counsels, technologists, academics and security advisors, amongst many others.

The BLTF’s first keynote presentation will be delivered by Oxford University’s Professor Ian Goldin, who will offer an overview of the challenges and opportunities bought about by globalisation and accelerating technological change. And, taking legal technology innovation to a practice-specific level, Mishcon de Reya Managing Partner Kevin Gold will share his real-world experiences of issues such as strategy, investment and implementation. Later, DWF’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Richard Hodkinson, will explore how law firms’ CTOs and their teams should evolve, given that technology is now becoming critical to many practice’s survival.

Several of the day’s sessions will focus on two of the hottest topics in the technology sector – blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI). Speakers on these subjects include Shawnna Hoffman, IBM’s Global Cogitative Legal Co-Leader, and Larry Bridgesmith, Adjunct Professor & Coordinator – Program on Law & Innovation at Vanderbilt Law School. Both Ms Hoffman and Professor Bridgesmith will discuss how AI and blockchain can be applied to the legal sector. And, in what promises to be a popular and lively panel discussion, Conference Chairman, Professor Richard Susskind OBE, will debate the rise of AI chatbots with Gary Gallen from Rradar and Tim Martin, founder of the new divorce chatbot, Larissa.

Besides a stellar line up of legal IT veteran speakers, this year’s event will include a BLTF first: an interview with an award-winning product Blockchain developer who is still a teenager. Sixteen-year-old Ian Lim, who recently won the NYC Startup Weekend Blockchain Edition, is due to take part in a video-based Q&A at the event, live from Minnesota USA. Lim will discuss how he led a team developing BlocVac, a blockchain-based medical records platform.

In addition to blockchain and legal AI, this year’s BTLF presentations will debate a wide range of operational issues relating to the use of technology in the legal sector. Topics to be discussed include driving IT innovation within law firms, the use of cloud technology, the challenges of cyber security, the effective use of data, and data protection compliance in the era of the GDPR.

More than 90 leading solutions providers will also be on-site at the BLTF, demonstrating a wide range of technology-related products and services aimed at the legal market.

Commenting on the final speaker line-up for BLTF 2018, Frances Armstrong, Netlaw Media’s UK & EMEA Managing Director, says: “We’re delighted that this year’s event will include such a wide range of expert speakers, ranging from legal sector veterans to teenagers. This just goes to show how technology-led innovation can come from anyone, anywhere, and potentially transform entire industries. This is a message that many of the event’s speakers will be sending out to more than 1,300 BLTF attendees, across each of event’s four presentation stages.”
