Rubik’s Cube Breaks Guinness World Record with HRH Prince Harry Mosaic

Rubik's Cube Team

Rubik’s Brand Ltd, the London-based company that owns the rights to the Rubik's Cube - the world’s most popular single toy – has broken the Guinness World Record for the most individual contributors to a Rubik’s Cube Mosaic. This was completed as part of a Rubik’s Cube pop-up immersive experience which took place this week.

The previous record of 293 participants was broken on October 2 with an astonishing 308 individual contributors. In order for the Guinness World Records attempt to be beaten, a team of talented speedcubers, including UK world champion George Scholey and London-based magician, Taran Harvey-Chadwick, were at hand to teach participants how to solve Rubik’s Cubes.

The completed mosaic is made with 1,575 Rubik’s Cubes and measures 2.56 metres wide x 2.05 metres high. The design for the mosaic, created by talented Norwegian cube artist, @cubearting, was completed with the help of two local schoolchildren, Henry Maxwell (aged 9) and Agatha Ayling Eynon (aged 11) who placed the final two cubes to complete the portrait and achieve the world record.

The Rubik’s Mosaic of HRH Prince Harry will be donated to the Teapot Trust, a Scottish charity that provides a UK-wide programme of art therapy in hospitals to support the wellbeing of children with chronic conditions and their families. The Teapot Trust will be arranging for the artwork to be on public display.

Upon the completion of the Guinness World Records achievement, CEO of Rubik’s Brand Ltd, Christoph Bettin said, “The Rubik’s Cube immersive pop-up experience was a massive success and it was fantastic to see so many enthusiastic individuals combine to create such a phenomenal achievement as breaking a Guinness World Record. We can’t wait for 2020 when we have so many exciting new initiatives to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Rubik’s Cube taking the world by storm.”
