The Carphone Warehouse implements Enigmatec’s Run Book Automation for policy-based IT process automation and management of its virtual environment.

London, UK 29 October 2007— The Carphone Warehouse is to deploy Enigmatec’s policy-based IT process automation and management solutions, also known as Run Book Automation (RBA), to production systems following a successful pilot in its development and test environment. The pilot demonstrated significant improvements in IT processes that support critical business applications including provisioning servers in minutes rather than weeks, automatically flexing IT resources to meet application and user demands in real time, as well as improving business continuity service levels. Return on investment is anticipated in under 12 months.

The Carphone Warehouse, which is the world's largest independent retailer of mobile phones and services, with 2,100 stores in 11 countries, has implemented Enigmatec’s Execution Management (EMS) – the leading cross-platform policy-based automation solution; EMS High Availability for modelling high-availability configurations, fine-tuning automated processes and managing fail over to the disaster recovery site; and Enigmatec Virtual Orchestrator (EVO) for provisioning virtual machines requested through a self-service portal.

Simon Post, CTO of The Carphone Warehouse said: “This is the most exciting software that I have seen in many years. It’s like ERP for IT which will improve the utilisation and efficiency of IT equipment and operations staff throughout the IT life cycle and make sure that IT is better aligned to the business.”

Supporting a rapidly growing and dynamic business, a key imperative for The Carphone Warehouse’s IT function is to ensure that IT resources, technology and operations can respond rapidly to changing market conditions, and in particular reduce the time to provision or re-purpose servers.

Since 2006 The Carphone Warehouse has invested aggressively in new data centres for production and non-production systems and adopted virtualisation across the technology piste, standardising on VMWare for its Windows and Linux servers and IBM System p APV (advanced power virtualisation) systems for the IBM AIX environment. It has also embraced ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) and is moving towards accreditation.

Enigmatec provides a layer of process automation to manage this IT topology most-effectively, reduce opportunities for human errors and meet ITIL standards for change, asset and service level management.

Enigmatec presents SLA (service level agreement) information, such as about the time taken to provision a server to both IT operations and business users via a dashboard.

The Carphone Warehouse expects to reduce disaster recovery costs through Enigmatec’s ability to virtualise business continuity. Under final user acceptance testing, this facility enables Enigmatec to automatically detect alerts and errors, and under user approval, fail-over the production systems environment to the non-production development and test environment so it can double-up as the disaster recovery back-up – all in a matter of seconds.
