From Primary School to President Obama, the UK Software Changing Education

UK software VideoScribe is captivating students of all ages worldwide, enhancing classroom education and even catching the attention of US President Barak Obama.

VideoScribe, brain child of Somerset company Sparkol, allows users to create video animation showcasing knowledge and ideas easily, without the need for technical ability or design know-how.

The eye catching medium was even harnessed by American Primary Schoolchildren when their White House tour was cancelled. Their scribed campaign was televised, and featured the children appealing to Barak Obama to recommence their tour following financial cuts. They school children later received confirmation that their campaign had successfully secured White House viewings.

VideoScribe uses a style of animation known as Whiteboard animation where information is revealed, instantly increasing engagement. Within schools, VideoScribe is being used to enhance learning by combining visuals and audio, allowing information to be processed at a deeper level with greater retention.

Sparkol founder Jon Air said: “VideoScribe engages multiple senses as users have to link concept with context which actually makes information more memorable. Our own research confirms that recall, retention, and engagement are all enhanced with the use of VideoScribe, when compared to a standard video production. When used as an education tool, VideoScribe has the power to increase exam results as students become more involved and invested in learning especially when creating their own scribes”.

Mediums that use multiple senses for learning are known to be more effective than those only using one alone. Richard Mayer, Cognitive Psychologist, has long established evidence that multiple sense engagement is a more efficient and effective way of learning, improving recall, retention and gaining a better clarity of information. In addition problem solving using multi-sensory approaches is enhanced by as much as 75%.

Stuart Taylor, IT Lecturer Highlands College said: “The key to all learning is that students have to be engaged. For any teacher this means trying new things, being a bit different…..I will continue to make them (scribe videos) as anything I can do to help students to progress is worthwhile”.

With UNESCO releasing stats that 28% of school children admit to not liking school and 56% find school boring, VideoScribe is a powerful tool for engaging students and enhancing exam scores.

Notes for Editors:.
• Users place Sparkol’s pre-coded images from Sparkol’s image library onto the VideoScribe canvas. These can be played and the image becomes animated. This occurs by the image of a hand drawing the element which then reveals the first image of the story.
• When used in a sequence, concepts and stories can be illustrated to clarify and convey meaning.
• Music, audio and photographs can be added enhancing the scribe further or to add a unique twist to established ideas and theories. With VideoScribe the opportunities for self-expression are endless.
