A secret worth ‘weighting’ for: pets unveiled as the key to slimming success

It’s the most common time of year to kick start a healthy lifestyle, with diet and exercise regimes front of mind for many after a calorific festive season. Now, new research has revealed that our pets are the most positive influence, encouraging us to ditch an evening in front of the TV for the great outdoors.

Whilst traditionally it’s a family member or partner that is roped in to keep us on the right path, a survey conducted by premium pet brand Fish4Dogs has found that 90% of us are more likely to exercise if it’s something that our dog can do with us.

The survey of 800 people from across the UK found that over a quarter of those questioned have taken up Agility as an extra activity with their dog and a further 60% of us would consider upping our current exercise programme if our beloved pooches could take part too. The survey revealed owners and pets get put through their paces also with CaniX, Flyball, Running, Swimming, Lure Racing, Mushing, Cycling, Hacking, Frisbee and Dancing with Dogs acting as fun ways to get fit.

Graham Smith CEO for Fish4Dogs says:

“Health is so important, and just like us our pets will of course benefit from a healthy diet and active lifestyle.

“It’s great that owners up and down the UK are enjoying getting fit with their pets, and it just reiterates what a positive influence dogs can have on their owners lives.”

With little greater than a contented canine, 41% of people said that they’ve seen a new lease of life in their dog since increasing their activity level and the encouragement for owners isn’t just helping them to embrace the outdoors, with 54% of owners citing their dogs as having the healthier diet.

Graham further adds:

“Much like we would add extra carbohydrates into our diet if we increased our activity level, make sure you’re adjusting your dog’s diet if need be. Consider taking some of our low calorie treats out with you, or add Fish4Dogs S.O.S Salmon Oil into their meals - the high levels of natural Omega 3 will aid joint mobility and as we always like to say: prevention is better than cure.”
