The Baby Box Co Launches New Free Class to Help Parents Keep Their Children Safe

The Baby Box Co e-learning platform for parents is pleased to announce the launch of its free Safe Plan class. Safe Plan takes approximately 10 minutes to complete at The Baby Box Co, covers vital information about UK guardianship and will creation, and provides parents with a £35 reward from Beyond upon course completion.

“I’m thrilled to launch the Safe Plan programme for UK parents,” says The Baby Box Co. President Jennifer Clary. “There is no question that there is an urgent need for this course as 60% of UK parents do not have a valid will in place. The Safe Plan class empowers parents with the information they need to protect their children and the rewarded resource to create a will without hassle and expense.”

Indeed, when surveyed, 5.4 million people in the UK reported having no idea how to make a will. This is a concerning statistic considering a will is the only legal way to specify what you want to have happen to your child in you die before they’re 18 years old.

“There are a lot of reasons people choose not to think about making a will. None of us like to think about our own mortality, certainly, but as parents we have a responsibility to do so in the interest of ensuring our children’s safety,” says Beyond CEO Ian Strang. “People also think that making a will is going to be too expensive or too difficult, which just isn’t true. Through partnership with The Baby Box Co, Beyond is enabling parents to create a will in just a few minutes online and for less than the cost of a meal for two in town.”

Of course, nobody wants to consider their own end, but the stark reality is that more than 24,000 children are bereaved of a parent each year in Britain and a majority of these children find themselves in a perilous position because their parents did not have a will to name a legal guardian.

“Putting off the will-making process is a risky strategy which means that parents are ultimately playing Russian Roulette with their child’s future,” warns solicitor Claire Currie, a partner at Kirwans. “By postponing the process, they are unwittingly putting their children at risk of court-battles, family disputes and potentially even foster care. If both parents were to die, and no official guardians had been appointed, the children could end up in foster care while the court appoints a guardian of its choosing,” explains Currie. “In addition, without a will in place children are only entitled to an inheritance if their parent’s estate is worth more than £250,000, or if the parent’s spouse has also passed away.”
