When is it the right time to come off HRT?

If you’ve been using HRT to ease your menopausal symptoms, at some point you’ll want to come off it. But unlike with many other medicines, you can’t suddenly stop taking HRT, as this could cause your troublesome hot flushes and night sweats to return.

In the Autumn 2008 issue of The Menopause Exchange newsletter, Dr Diana Mansour, consultant community gynaecologist, looks at why women may wish to come off HRT – and how they can do this safely. The article gives you step-by-step advice on coming off HRT tablets or patches. There’s also information on going back on HRT if your symptoms return and aren’t eased by alternative methods.

“Coming off HRT is fairly straightforward, but you do need to follow your doctor’s advice,” says Norma Goldman, founder and director of The Menopause Exchange. “You will need to gradually reduce the HRT dose over a few months to prevent your symptoms returning.”
