Expert tips for the menopause

Not all women can or want to take HRT to relieve their menopausal symptoms and fortunately there are several other options available for these women to try. But which dietary supplements, self-help measures, lifestyle changes and medical options do top menopause experts recommend?

For the Autumn 2010 issue of The Menopause Exchange newsletter, we asked some of the UK’s top menopausal experts for their suggestions on alternatives to HRT for symptoms like hot flushes and vaginal dryness. The top tips include phytoestrogens (in the diet and as supplements), lifestyle measures, vaginal moisturisers and prescription drug alternatives.

“Most women can choose from a variety of management options at the menopause,” says Norma Goldman, founder and director of The Menopause Exchange. “From avoiding hot flush triggers to trying vaginal moisturisers, there is an option to suit different needs, depending on a woman’s symptoms and medical or family medical history. It’s important to discuss this with a healthcare professional.”
