New trend - return of the personal monogram

A personal monogram

Handwritten communications have been seeing something of a revival recently and luxury design company ananya(Sanskrit for ‘without equal) has noticed a growing number of clients asking for bespoke correspondence cards and even personal monograms.

The design of a personal monogram is in keen demand from both bridal couples and interestingly women embarking on a new life stage (following divorce or career change). Although traditionally the monogram uses initials, many people these days choose a symbol: perhaps a flower or an animal as their personal marque. The creation of a personal monogram gives a sense of stability, of solidity, of consistency and also harks back to more settled times. Today, the monogram might reference a family crest or heraldry, but in a much more democratic and often light-hearted way.

ananya is a greetings card company which also designs for key milestone events – weddings, civil partnerships, birth announcements, as well as creating Diwali and Eid cards.

Uniquely, the design team at ananya often take inspiration from their Indian heritage.

A personalised monogram costs from £100 and bespoke correspondence cards cost from £200. The ways that the monogram can be used are endless but the most frequent applications are:

• birth announcements
• thank you cards
• change of address cards
• stickers
• ink stamps
• personal stationery

Founder Vaishali Shah says, “People get so much information by email that a handwritten note really, really stands out. Increasingly, I’ve noticed my clients say that they want to acknowledge kind thoughts or gifts with a handwritten card as it can really make a difference to someone’s day.”
