LEADING HUMAN RIGHTS BARRISTER TO HOST JOURNEY TO JUSTICE FUNDRAISING PARTY

In the shadow of Brexit and the election, inspiring social justice through history, music and the arts

Baroness Helena Kennedy QC is one of the UK’s most respected human rights barristers and a patron of Journey to Justice. She will be speaking at a summer party in aid of the education charity.

Journey to Justice (JtoJ) inspires people to take action for social justice through learning about the role of ‘ordinary people’ in human rights movements, the arts and social change. JtoJ’s work addresses the sense of powerless, marginalisation and lack of ‘voice’ so many people in the UK feel. Their multi-arts, interactive travelling exhibition tells little known stories of people involved in the US civil rights movement and its universal messages and makes links to UK history. It has already been in Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Sheffield, Tower Hamlets and Lambeth and is now in Nottingham. Next stops: Bristol, Dorchester, Liverpool, Stockton, Leicester, Hull and Newham.

As relevant today as ever, with Brexit, the general election and President Trump in power, the exhibition also tells local untold stories of struggles for human rights wherever it goes. With music, art, poetry, films and oral history, Journey to Justice shows how change can be led by ‘people like us’.

The event will demonstrate the fantastic range of JtoJ’s work as a very young charity (No. 1170886), while building its supporter and funding base. Their other distinguished patrons: Lord Herman Ouseley, founder of Kick It Out, the anti-discrimination football project; Leyla Hussein, campaigner against gender based violence, co-founder of Daughters of Eve; Sir Geoffrey Bindman QC, human rights lawyer and Dr Paul Stephenson, a leader of the Bristol bus boycott 1963 will attend.
