Google’s new renewable energy announcement means nothing without investment in talent
Following Google’s announcement today that it has made 18 new renewable energy deals, U.S. global rail and energy talent specialist, SKI Corp, has expressed that recruiting talent must be made a priority for these projects to actually have an impact.
This is Google’s largest package of renewable energy deals yet, worth a total of 1,600 megawatts. However, with research from the Solar Foundation revealing that jobs in the industry decreased in both 2018 and 2017, with 17,000 roles shed since its ‘boom year’ in 2016, the energy talent specialist warns there won’t be enough resources to deliver the results.
Steve Rawlingson, Group CEO of SKI Corp, commented on the impact of a lack of focus on talent:
“There’s no two ways about it, Google needs the manpower for these investments and projects to have value. However, one crucial problem that not enough people are talking about, is the lack of professionals entering the industry. With a large proportion of the existing workforce reaching retirement age, and a significant number of professionals lost during job cuts, we must do more to reach new workers. Google has a fantastic opportunity here to attract young professionals to the renewables sector. It’s no secret that the industry has been losing candidates to big tech firms, but now Google can use its reputation to help lure talent to the industry and support future growth.”
