Harley Street Phobia Guru Gives His Jungle Predictions as I’m A Celebrity Line-up Is Announced

Phobia Guru Adam Cox

My advice to the contestants would be to have seen me in Harley Street before they flew out

• Full I’m a Celebrity Line-up has been announced ahead of this Sunday’s launch, with ten celebrities confirmed to take part

• Harley Street Hypnotherapist Adam Cox is the UK’s leading phobia expert and has been casting his eye over the contestants

• Contestants will face any number of feared creatures in the jungle, as well as enclosed spaces and heights

The hotly anticipated new series of I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! launches this Sunday, and the full line-up has been confirmed a week ahead of time. Many of the celebrities’ participation had already been leaked, most notably Caitlyn Jenner who has attracted an appearance sum north of half a million pounds. These leaks are now becoming concrete as the celebrities begin landing down under, although some have issued denials regarding the reason for their visit.

Every year viewers are compelled as they watch such known public figures face a myriad of challenges, many of which are specifically designed to scare them and push them to their limits. As the UK’s leading phobia expert, Harley Street’s Adam Cox believes that certain contestants will have their fears laid bare for public consumption:

“The show is interesting for the audience because they get to see celebrities encountering fears and phobias that are common and relatable. Animals are some of the most popular phobias with fear of spiders, fear of insects and fear of snakes all being in the top 10 phobias. The contestants are dropped into the jungle, so a fear of heights is going to pose an issue for any contestant even before they arrive in the jungle. Many of the contestants will feel conflicted about being in the jungle. A part of them will be there to boost their careers or overcome new challenges while a part will be terrified of what the producers have in store for them.”

While some contestants have yet to publicly reveal their phobia, others have well-known fears. After pulling out last year, Good Morning Host Kate Garraway is confirmed for this year’s show. She has also confirmed that she is afraid of almost everything , saying ‘I’m really scared of snakes, spiders and rats. I’m claustrophobic and I don’t really like heights.’ Dealing with one phobia is tough, but Adam believes Kate will have a hard time juggling her many fears in the jungle:

“Kate will have the toughest time in the jungle because audiences will vote for the contestant that has the most intense reactions. As a person with several phobias she will face more trials than other contestants and if she does well in those trial and overcomes the adversity the audiences will warm to her, if she freezes and backs out of the challenges then she’ll be voted off very quickly.”

Another contestant rumoured to be scared of everything is footballer turned pundit Ian Wright, whose former teammate Mark Bright revealed that Ian has a particular fear of the dark.

Capital FM DJ Roman Kemp has a slightly unusual phobia of frogs, saying that he ‘hates them more than anything’. He recently undertook a challenge which involved touching the amphibian whilst blindfolded , which may help prepare him for a similar challenge in the jungle. Adam believes that for those celebrities with phobias, the jungle experience will be potentially traumatic for them as they face their fears:

“People often assume that simply facing a fear is the best way to overcome it. While this is true in a supportive environment with expert psychological help on hand and when the individual feels ready it can actually be counterproductive if the individual isn’t ready and feels forced to confront their fear. Those contestants that aren’t ready and are forced to face their nightmare will have a traumatic experience that could even lead to symptoms seen in those suffering from PTSD.”

Other contestants include actors Jacqueline Jossa and Andrew Maxwell, Radio 1 DJ Adele Roberts, popstars Nadine Coyle and Myles Stephenson and retired rugby player James Haskell. While these celebrities are yet to disclose whether they have a phobia, the jungle should prove an unforgiving environment.

Adam has some advice for the contestants as they face a gruelling three weeks in the Australian wilderness:

“My advice to the contestants would be to have seen me in Harley Street before they flew out. That’s too late now so my advice would be to focus on controlling their breathing and physiology. While they may be terrified, if they focus on taking long deep breathes and attempting to relax their muscles it will trick their bodies into evaluating the trigger for the fear as less scary. This may mean that a level 10 fear is perceived to be a level 7 fear. This means less adrenalin and a reduced likelihood of a panic attack”.
