With the gift-giving season already on the horizon, ParcelGenie - the application for sending real gifts on Facebook - has studied gifting behaviour in 10,000 small gift transactions across the UK, to see if regional, gender and age stereotypes hold true.

There was a distinct North/South divide in how gifts were given - Northerners spent 15% on average more per gift than Southerners, yet those in the South sent 20% more gifts overall. The most generous region - by number of gifts sent - was the North East, followed by the South East and South West.

Of the cities where gifts were most frequently given, Manchester led the pack, followed by Liverpool and London. However, the biggest spenders came from London, Birmingham and Leeds. High-spending Londoners’ favourite small gifts were alcohol and chocolate...
