Plant oestrogens: an essential guide

Research shows that if eaten regularly, plant oestrogens may have oestrogen-like effects on the body. In the UK, the average daily intake of plant oestrogens is low. So many women try to eat more plant oestrogens, or take phytoestrogen supplements, to ease their menopausal symptoms. But can this help – and, if so, how much do you need?

In the Winter 2016-17 issue of The Menopause Exchange newsletter, consultant dietitian Angie Jefferson looks at the role of plant oestrogens in the management of the menopause. She discusses the scientific evidence, which foods are high in plant oestrogens (and how much you need to eat) and whether phytoestrogen supplements work.

“Some women find that eating more phytoestrogen-rich foods, or taking supplements, helps to ease their menopausal symptoms, such as hot flushes and night sweats,” says Norma Goldman, founder and director of The Menopause Exchange. “But it’s important to choose the right foods and make this a long-term lifestyle change, as it can take two or three months to see any benefits.”

The Menopause Exchange, which was established in 1999, is completely independent and is not sponsored by any companies. It provides impartial, easily understood information to women and healthcare professionals. The Menopause Exchange quarterly newsletter contains articles written by top medical experts, such as gynaecologists, GPs, consultants, specialist menopause nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, complementary practitioners etc.

Other articles in the Winter 2016-17 newsletter include coming off HRT, the menopause at work and vaginal dryness, as well as recent news, Ask the Experts Q&As and details of talks by Norma Goldman.
