From 6 April 2009, the right for employees to request flexible working will be extended to include an estimated 4.5 million parents with children aged 16 or under.

Six million carers, parents with children under six, and parents with disabled children under 18 already have the right to request flexible working.

Commenting on the new legislation, Greg Bolshaw, Managing Director of remote working specialists Ubiquitec said, "Flexible working covers a wide variety of working practices, but we expect this latest change to result in a particularly large increase in the number of employees working from home."

Figures published by the Office of National Statistics show that over 3.4 million people, 12.1% of the working population, currently work from home on a regular or permanent basis.
