Survey reveals ‘Homeowners Guide to Flood Resilience’ is considered the go-to guide for resilience advice
‘Homeowners Guide to Flood Resilience’ was cited as the guide that is referred to most when seeking technical flood resilience advice
IN a survey conducted by the BRE that interviewed over 250 property and flood industry professionals on flood resilience measures and guidance, the Know Your Flood Risk ‘Homeowners Guide to Flood Resilience’ was cited as the guide that is referred to most when seeking technical flood resilience advice.
The survey, which was produced as part of CIRIA’s project to develop a Code of Practice and guidance for property flood resilience, found that 54% of 142 respondents refer to the guide for technical help and advice. This was higher than other technical documents on the market, including planning guidance, BSI PAS1188 data, local authority guidance, the PCA’s Flood Code of Practice, or Defra’s Post-Installation Effectiveness Guide.
Mary Dhonau OBE, Chief Executive of the Know Your Flood Risk campaign said: “The Homeowners Guide to Flood Resilience is a constantly-evolving document, which is designed to provide free guidance and tips to homeowners who wish to make their property resilient to flood water. It’s very satisfying to see that it is also considered the ‘go-to’ guide by many professionals working in construction, development and flood management, following the output from this survey.
“We are currently working on a new update for the guide, which includes two new sections. The first is on temporary defences at community level, while the second is on sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) and advice on how to make small adaptations at the property-level to reduce flooding. Watch this space for updates.”
The Know Your Flood Risk Campaign aims to raise awareness of the risk of flooding from all sources. It is one of the UK’s most recognised online sources for helping people find out the flood risk related to their current or future homes. The free Homeowners Guide to Flood Resilience is available to download from here.

About Know Your Flood Risk:
Know Your Flood Risk is a campaign raising awareness of the risk of flooding from all sources - not just from the river, sea, or a visible water course. The majority of flood insurance claims are for surface water flooding where there is no obvious water to alert a homeowner to the potential risk. The Know Your Flood Risk campaign provides essential practical guidance to enable homeowners and property professionals to mitigate against and prepare for the risk of being flooded. The campaign supplies a property-specific flood report for £24 which can be used by homeowners to help identify the potential risk, as well as confirm whether they will be able to obtain insurance at standard terms. More information is available at www.knowyourfloodrisk.co.uk.
