New research: the six reasons why the NHS lures overseas doctors
Skilled doctors from many countries want to work for the NHS because they recognise that doing so will provide a myriad of exciting opportunities
New research reveals that 85% of hospital doctors think that working for the NHS offers them great opportunities for career progression. That’s according to a poll of 1300 visitors to the Remedium Partners website, a consultancy which specialises in the recruitment of overseas permanent doctors to ease the NHS’ reliance on agency locums.
The survey, which asked medical professionals to select what they felt were the main advantages of being employed by the NHS, also reveals that 42% of respondents felt the training and CPD they received was a notable benefit. The same number believe that their lifestyle as a doctor in the UK was a perk of the job, and a further 28% said that learning new skills is proving to be a key advantage. Other significant benefits for respondents include the fact that they are working for such a reputable healthcare system and can access the UK’s education system.
Commenting on the research, Remedium Partners Director and Co-Founder David Green, said:
“There’s no doubt that the National Health Service is one of the most highly-regarded healthcare systems in the world. Skilled doctors from many countries want to work for the NHS because they recognise that doing so will provide a myriad of exciting opportunities, particularly for their ongoing professional development.
“Our research shows the great benefits to be had by taking up employment in an NHS hospital. These include excellent training and opportunities to learn new skills, a chance to experience the UK way of life and the associated benefits – such as its schools – and, of course, the distinction of having worked for such a globally renowned health service.
“It’s well-known that NHS hospitals are facing skills shortages and that the Home Office recently made changes to the visa system to make it easier for overseas doctors to take up posts here. There’s no doubt that these highly skilled professionals are valued by UK hospital Trusts and our poll shows that, in return, their own careers and lives benefit from working in our hospitals. We hope that this research encourages more overseas doctors to apply for posts.”
