Field trials of directional safety signs systems carried out by the University of Greenwich, found 60% of people don’t notice emergency exit signs during an emergency evacuation like a fire alarm.

The knock on effect for the hotel industry is queues by the stairs and busy, chaotic corridors during a fire alarm and the result is often bad reviews and guests feeling so unsafe they vow not to return.

The University trials, which included the use of Evaclite dynamic directional safety signs, found people had a 200% improvement in signage detection with the dynamic signs.

In the trial, participants were asked to go down a corridor with standard passive emergency signs. The majority of people said they didn’t notice the signs, and even if they did, they didn’t follow the way the sign recommended.

The key to the trial was the time it took to make a decision on which direction to go. The seconds saved could be crucial.
