5,580,587 Brits will have abandoned their 2020 New Year’s Resolutions by the end of Quitters Day, new research has found.
Research by Strava recently found that in 2020, Sunday 19th January is the day when most people will give up on their resolutions. Based on calculations by recipe box delivery service HelloFresh, 40% of New Year’s Resolutions have already failed by this point, despite our best intentions.
On average, 21% of Brits reportedly make a resolution for the year ahead, meaning this year almost 14 million resolutions were made.
A survey by HelloFresh established the most popular resolutions for 2020. Exercising more regularly was the most popular change to make, with 36% of respondents vowing to do so on average.
This resolution was most popular in the North East, with 41.86% of people choosing it for 2020. In fact, of the 558,161 people to make a resolution in the region, 233,646 have taken up the get fit challenge — yet 93,458 will have already given up by Quitters Day.
In second place was eating more vegetables and balanced meals, with 32.5% of Brits setting this resolution. Again, the North East was most keen on making this change at 46.51%. 259,600 people vowed to do so, yet 103,840 people will have already quit by 19th January.
Becoming more environmentally conscious is in third place, with almost a quarter of Brits vowing to do so overall. This was most popular in Northern Ireland (39.29%), followed by London (36.8%). 62,101 Northern Irelanders and 275,367 Londoners are predicted to give up by Quitters Day.
Clare Jossa is a life coach who has spent over 15 years mentoring people to achieve their New Year’s resolution goals. She commented:
“You need to be totally bought into your New Years’ resolution and choose something that excites you. Know why you want to achieve this and focus on that when willpower wanes. Focus on one day at a time and if you fall off the wagon once, look at the next day as a fresh start.”
With 2020 only a few weeks in, there’s still time to achieve your goals for the year ahead, regardless of whether your resolutions have fallen to the wayside to date.

Sources & Data:
HelloFresh conducted a survey of 1,000 UK adults to establish the most popular New Year’s resolutions for 2020.
UK and regional population data is from Office for National Statistics, from the table MYE2: Population estimates: Persons by single year of age and sex for local authorities in the UK, mid-2018. The full data sheet - Mid2018-2019 LA Boundaries - is available to download here.
An average quit rate was calculated based on an average of 2.13% resolutions broken per day, each day between January 1st 2020 and January 19th 2020. We then calculated what this equates to based on regional populations and the popularity of specific resolutions.
