We’re not just preaching HANA, we are actively using it to help deliver service to customers and helping our customers to do the same

World’s largest HANA repository grows to 6.25 billion rows at a rate of 18 million per day

Nottingham, UK 13 May - Centiq, also known as the SAP HANAExperts, today revealed just what its slogan ‘Getting the Job Done’ means by lifting the lid on what is believed to be the world’s largest single repository for performance and capacity data on live HANA implementations. Coupled with its Data Operations, or Data Ops, expertise this treasure trove of systems data gives it an unmatched view of HANA systems and turning capacity and performance decisions from ‘dark arts’ to evidence-based science.

In total, Centiq’s HANA database stores 6.25 billion rows of systems data on behalf of its customers. Over the last 12 months, this ‘megastore of data’ has grown threefold, from a ‘mere’ 6 million rows per day. To cope with demand and in keeping with its ‘Getting the Job Done philosophy, Centiq migrated this data from MySQL to HANA using custom node.js code and all with zero downtime to the business.

The HANA performance data Centiq manages clearly shows just how much data is being processed and stored in near real-time as well as how optimised data loads are. This information helps Centiq customers such as Arco, Pets at Home, Greggs, Marks & Spencer and others based all over Europe, make the critical infrastructure decisions which is vital for maintaining performance and reliability at the right cost.

Ultimately, the system information stored by Centiq allows customers to focus on their own business metrics and in doing so powers everything from profitability analysis, stock management and the aggregation of global financial results from disparate sources.

Centiq founder, Glyn Heath, said: “When it comes to Big Data there has been a lot more talk than action. Given the disruptive IT involved, this is perhaps no surprise. Our approach is different. We’re not just preaching HANA, we are actively using it to help deliver service to customers and helping our customers to do the same. This means any ‘pain’ our customers feel with this innovative technology, we feel it too. We just get the job done.”

The DataOps team at Centiq uses the advanced Optiq managed service dashboard to optimise the performance of this vast repository, which is itself also housed, on SAP HANA, creating the largest repository of its kind in the world.

In addition, to handle the daily data deluge Centiq has developed tools including a high performance scalable message queuing system for incoming data using Vert.x, Redis and Java development. Its technical teams are currently developing HANA models to present Capacity and Performance metrics to customers via a web based interface and is aiding direct analysis by its Capacity planning team using SAP Lumira and Analysis for Office.
