From stage to snapper! Exciting new photography captures unique view of summer music

American Express commissions musician Alison Goldfrapp to swap her microphone for a camera to celebrate this year’s Summer Series at Somerset House


An new collection of images, “Anticipation”, shot by performer and photographer Alison Goldfrapp captures headline acts as they prepare for Summer Series at Somerset House with American Express.

Alison Goldfrapp, from electronic music duo Goldfrapp, who performed at Summer Series in 2013, has been commissioned by headline sponsor American Express to swap her microphone for a digital ‘powershot’ camera. In her first commercial commission, Alison photographed British soul singer Laura Mvula and Anglo-Italian solo guitarist Jack Savoretti to offer a unique view of the build up to the iconic music festival, which starts tomorrow.

The collection documents the anticipation and excitement during the build-up to a gig along with the rush of energy and elation experienced during and after the performance to give fans a never before seen view of the artists as they prepare to take to the stage.

Unveiled in two phases, the first images see Laura and Jack in the iconic surroundings of Somerset House; from the intimate antechambers where they will prepare for their gig to the majestic courtyard that will be their stage.

Alison also shadowed Laura on July 10th as she performed at Summer Series, documenting her journey from the dressing room to the final encore.

Alison Goldfrapp comments: “Photography has become a passion for me, so when American Express invited me to do this, I jumped at the chance. I can vividly recall the moments that made my performance at the Summer Series so memorable: from the anticipation before going on stage to the energy of the crowd and the sense of sheer elation as the audience were captivated by the music.

“As artists, Laura’s vibrancy and intensity, contrasted with Jack’s laid-back vibe made them fascinating subjects to shoot against the stunning backdrop of Somerset House.”
