(UK) 2ND NOVEMBER 2017

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a new law that will regulate how organisations protect the personal information of people.

The law will come into force on 25th May 2018 and will introduce stringent regulations for the handling and storage of personal data.

Industry experts attending the GDPR IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR CONFERENCE will hold seminars to assist and support public sector organisations to prepare for the regulation.

The GDPR conference is aimed at showing public institutions new data management technologies and tools as well as providing key talks on how to be compliant in line with data security requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation law.

The new regulations are intended to improve cyber security and reduce the possibility of data breaches, thus reducing the chances of personal information and data from being released. Organisations with greater transparency and strengthened information security measures will instil wider public trust.

Under GDPR rules, regulators have the power to audit systems, measures, and reporting procedures in the event of a data breach. Institutions are required to appoint a data protection officer (DPO) to manage compliance and reporting.

Documentation regarding consent and erasure of personal information is now stricter, and greater accountability and transparency is now required. The Information Commissioner’s Office (the ICO) will be empowered by GDPR to levy fines amounting up to 4 per cent of global annual revenue, depending on the nature of the data breach.

“Sensitive public information must be protected in its various formats and to that end, underlying security practices and organisational governance must be qualitatively improved,” said Nick Churchill-Evans, Director of cloudThing.

“Many organisations have yet to grasp the full extent of this new regulation and this conference is a good place for them to get a head start on issues such as compliance and dealing with data security incidents ,” Nick continued.

“Institutions that have already implemented GDPR directives will find this conference will enhance their current efforts on data security and transparency,” Nick said further.

The public sector in the United Kingdom holds vast amounts of personal data, including health, tax, and judicial records, so it is vital that organisations keep abreast of the new legislation. New compliance programmes must be adopted to make public data easily accessible while ensuring higher levels of protection.

Public sector organisations which use third-party organisations to provide services, such as the NHS, or bodies that have outsourced hosting of servers, have to ensure GDPR compliance. Staff must be provided with the necessary training and awareness, and additional sources guidance and support as required.
