Only companies that could show excellent levels of staff engagement, and policies geared toward staff wellbeing and support, made the top 100

Zen has again been recognised as one of the best companies to work for in the UK. The internet and communications services provider was placed at number 44 in the Sunday Times’ prestigious Top 100 Companies To Work For list, and also awarded a two-star Best Company rating for ‘outstanding’ staff engagement. Zen last entered the awards in 2016, placing at 56 in the Top 100.

A selected group of Zen’s 460 staff were there to pick up the award at a special ceremony in London hosted by the Sunday Times and Best Companies, the organisation behind the Top 100. Over a thousand businesses entered the awards, each submitting a comprehensive staff survey and a detailed application form with supporting evidence. Only companies that could show excellent levels of staff engagement, and policies geared toward staff wellbeing and support, made the top 100.

Andrew Fryatt, Zen’s managing director for residential and small business, said: “We’re really proud to be named as one of the UK’s top places to work for a second time. Our core long-term objectives will always remain happy staff, happy customers and happy suppliers, in that order. We value staff as our greatest asset, and strive to make Zen a company they are happy and proud to work for.”

Andrew added that Zen will not rest on its laurels.
After the company last entered the awards in 2016, a number of initiatives were put in place to help tackle issues thrown up by analysis of the staff survey. They included a private healthcare plan, the ability to buy extra holidays and a quarterly reward scheme to recognise outstanding contributions from staff across the business.

“Those initiatives helped us to an even better result and a place in the top 50 this time, and once again every team in the business will be carefully looking through the results of the survey to see where improvements can be made,” he said. “Those reports will be collated and we will then develop new initiatives to make Zen an even better place to work.”

The Best Companies awards are the largest survey of workplace engagement in the UK, and measure organisations for leadership, staff well-being, how staff feel about their managers, colleagues and the company generally, and how happy they are with their pay and benefits. Best Companies has been developing its accreditation standards for over 12 years, in the belief that staff satisfaction is a key driver of company success.

Jonathan Austin, Best Companies founder and chief executive officer, said: “This year, it is encouraging to see that more and more organisations are recognising the value of employee engagement and are willing to benchmark themselves against the best to ensure they are offering their employees the best possible experience.”
