From Moments to Memories

This new and exciting concept is the first of its kind that aims to strengthen the relationship between grandparent and grandchild

There are approximately 9 million* people who make up the grandparent generation of ‘unofficial childcarers’ in the UK. The launch of a new website and range of workshops from The Grandparent Hub aims to offer support and create happiness through the grandparent years with upbeat and positive advice, tips and ideas.

A new place for grandparents

Grandparents are now the number 1 childcare solution, above nursery day care and childminders, which saves parents over £16 billion a year in fees*.

According to research conducted by the Grandparent Hub, around a third of grandparents look after their grandchildren a few times a week, with 72% planning day trips and other activities. The majority prefer activities where they can get involved rather than accompanying them to clubs and classes, with 88% favouring playing games, 85% visiting the park and 80% reading together.

But how easy is it to find new activities and ideas that can keep the kids interested?

The Grandparent Hub offers exactly that – an online community for grandparents to find places to go and ideas on entertaining grandchildren. The Grandparent Hub provides the chance to share experiences, gain inspiration for things to do, offers, and educational resources. Lighthearted and tongue in cheek, The Grandparent Hub aims to bring out the positive and fun side of being a grandparent. With thought leadership pieces, charity events, workshops, and a booking platform for experiences coming soon, the Grandparent Hub aims to build the bond between grandparent and grandchild.

Ambassador, Dr Niamh Clune comments, ”The Grandparent Hub is a special place to share, celebrate and give voice to the joy and magic of grandparenthood. It also offers the opportunity to pass on our collective, accumulated wisdom (a very important gift of the past to the future and sometimes overlooked) and to be a supportive network for each other. The Grandparent Hub is a great idea and much needed.”

This new and exciting concept is the first of its kind that aims to strengthen the relationship between grandparent and grandchild, and improve mental wellbeing for both. It will do this through:

1. Helping create meaningful relationships between grandparent and grandchild, through time spent together doing activities and play;
2. Providing an online platform to search and book experiences and events to bond grandparents and children – coming soon;
3. Being a one-stop shop for grandparents to network, share, learn and laugh;
4. Improving the bond between grandparents and grandchildren – better mental wellbeing for both and development of child – a dual impact on society.

Relaunching in May 2018, the new online platform has a collective social following of 73,000 people regularly engaging with its content. It has already partnered with Kobo, Barclays, Gibson’s Games and Toy Box Tots to deliver content and advertising across the launch period.

The site provides an opportunity to share their experiences, workshops on social media and blogging will support this, as well as help them connect with younger family members.

Founders, Suellen Morris and Sharon Slade comment, “After a period of getting to know our grandparents, we are excited to be re-launching our new website. We all know how key grandparents are in grandchildren's lives these days, especially with childcare being so expensive, so it's great to be able to provide this website for these grandparents. There's so little out there just for grandparents that we hope this will give them some great ideas on things to do with their grandchildren and help them create wonderful memories from these moments.”
