● 61 new cars are in contention for the 2019 What Car? Car of the Year Award
● Winner to be announced on Tuesday 22 January
● New categories for 2019 Awards include Plug-in Hybrid of the Year, Pick-up of the Year and Sports SUV of the Year
● All of the cars shortlisted for overall Car of the Year can be found here

What Car? has revealed the shortlist of 61 new models in contention for its prestigious 2019 Car of the Year title.

The winner will be announced on Tuesday 22 January at the consumer champion’s annual Car of the Year Awards ceremony, held in association with Warranty Direct and BNP Paribas Cardif.

What Car? is renowned for its thoroughness when assessing new cars, with all vehicles driven back-to-back with their rivals on road and track, and practicality, equipment, running costs and What Car?’s unique True MPG fuel economy figures all factored into the final verdicts.

As a result of this exhaustive testing over 46 years, What Car?’s judgements are widely regarded as the most influential on Britain’s car buyers.

To qualify for the overall Car of the Year Award, a car has to have been launched in the previous 12 months, and it needs to be available to order by the time the award is announced.

Steve Huntingford, editor of What Car?, said: “The shortlist is bigger than ever in 2019, thanks to the huge number of outstanding models launched across a wide range of categories. This makes the job of choosing our Car of the Year more difficult, but it also means new car buyers are spoilt for choice.”
